There was a point in time when Eunbi was convinced she would die if she somehow were to fall out with Eunha. Her heart would give up, her body fail to function. How could she be anything other than one half of Eunha-and-Eunbi?

There was something special about that gentle naivety that comes with being young, the thought that all good things are infinite, that your best friend could be trusted to do no wrong. She knows better now at twenty-five. It's always the losses closest to you that hurt the most.

Seeing her in public is like a shot to the heart. The last time they had met up, Eunbi had spent the entire time trying to find something, anything salvageable. Making excuses for issues that weren't her own. Trying so hard to prevent the beginning of the end from rushing in and bowling them over.

Eunbi grabs hold of Yewon’s arm and steers them in the other direction. They walk until Eunbi loses her in the crowd and even then the panic doesn’t subside.

She knows better at twenty-five, but it doesn’t erase what once existed. Her resolve is strong, but Eunbi worries that Eunha could smile at her just once and she’d fall back in line as though nothing was ever wrong. Seal over all the cracks in their relationship with gold lacquer to make it pretty. Display their reunion on show for the world as proof they had made it. There's a certain type of intimacy that comes along with knowing someone your entire life and she craves it.

None of it matters anymore. Eunbi knows there's no turning back.

“It’s been a year, and I still think about her all the time,” she explains to Yewon later. “There’s this tiny selfish part in the back of my mind that always wonders whether she thinks of me too.”

“It would be strange if she didn’t,” Yewon replies. “You’ve spent more of your lives together than apart.”

“I don’t want to think about her,” Eunbi admits. She's tired of grieving something she walked away from.

Yewon smiles softly. “Maybe one day you won’t,” she says.
