“Cut.” The director calls out and the hand on Suji’s thigh tightens. “Ah, Suzy-ssi. Your lines.” She reminds Suji.

Suji immediately lets out a round of apologies, a pleasant smile plastered on her face as she bows to the crew.

“Let’s take five, hmm, everyone?” The director announces and then steps away with her phone in hand.

It’s not a massive fuck-up, just one dialogue, and the camera setup doesn’t need to be changed so it should be an easy enough retake when they resume.

But it rankles Suji all the same. She can’t remember the last time she messed up during a shoot because her co-actor flustered her.

It hasn’t happened in almost a decade and Suji has almost forgotten what it was like to be reeled in so deeply into the tension of a scene that it has her slipping out of character.

“Suji-yah.”

“Yes, unnie?”

“Yah, we’re not filming right now,” Hyeri throws her head back and cackles.

Suji wants to fucking die—no, she needs the earth to crack open and swallow her up immediately.

Hyeri sobers just enough for her smile to catch an edge not-so-different from the constant smirks she’s armed with when she’s in character. “Watch out before you get too used to calling me unnie.”

Suji’s so mortified she can’t even fake a laugh convincingly, something she had mastered as a fresh-faced fifteen year old.

She’d get up and take a break, a real one, but Hyeri’s eyes are sharp as they rove over her, even though her smile melts into something more typical, something sweeter.

Of course, a voice at the back of her mind reminds her, Hyeri’s learnt the exact same tricks as her at the exact same time.

Suji can only trust her smiles as much as she can trust her own.

It’s a wholly different matter that this is the first time in over a decade that they’ve known each other that Suji has actually had to second-guess her most uncomplicated friendship.

Hyeri’s silly and spontaneous and forthright, she’s well-worn and familiar like a dog-eared book, and Suji knows her and has known her since before they skipped classes at the same school and ended up at auditions for the same role.

Nothing about Hyeri in a uniform should be making her fumble her lines and call over her manager for a bottle of water after every take.

Hell, they haven’t even shot the scene where they’re supposed to be naked in a bathtub yet—merely playing tug and pull in the hallways of the abandoned school where they were shooting, in a way they were never afforded the time to in real life.

Suji, the wide-eyed and naive newcomer, easy to pick on and waiting to be ruined; Hyeri, the all-knowing goddess who would make sure to catch Suji in her open arms, by hook or by crook.

Suji would think she’s overly immersed in the role and needs something other than a simple breather to break her out of it. She’d rectify whatever needed to be rectified. She is an old hand at this job, after all.

But Hyeri’s hand doesn’t stray from Suji’s thigh even once, not during the break and especially not during the retakes.

Is it just practice for the character, when Suji’s unthinking ‘unnie’ has her fingers digging into the flesh?

Or are they playing pretend at playing pretend?

Suji doesn’t know yet. She does wonder, though, if there will be an imprint of Hyeri’s fingers left on her skin, when they finally pack up for the day.
