Prompt:
I was drinking in the daylight
I was looking for a way to tell you
That without you I don't feel right
Killing myself just to understand you

How could I see you with anyone but me?

-- can't help myself; now, now
(the whole song is like... you like your friend but you can't tell how they feel about you, which probably means they don't like you that way, which means you should stop fantasizing about being with them #___# reality hurts girls)

this is so lovely... thank you for filling this prompt!! ♡ i love it when people are close but still find new layers to the other, i love it when people think they know each other and then have to face the fact that they don't, not that well anyway. and i love that with cool ryujin...

this part is so good: watching Chaeryeong dance in their practice room mirrors and then not meeting her eyes afterwards. It would be so easy to ask why. But Chaeryeong is also the kind of person who will avoid any sort of conversation that might spiral into an emotional confrontation, and anyway, it’s easier to make guesses in her head. i feel like the fic builds each of them up to this point where that sliver of a reveal is so good. also: chaeryeong observing ryujin's habits being a habit of her own... ALSO IS THAT FORMULA 1 FAN SHIN YUNA????? i love this, tysm!!

this reminds me of that one cr letter to rj how she's the coolest and starts listing rj's habits in detail...and how in this cr is watching rj in great details too but even then there may be parts of rj she's new or yet to figure out T_T and the image them in the kitchen drowning in the morning lights feels so intimate...i love it aa!!! but something about it surprised her too: that she hadn’t known Ryujin would care this much, and that Chaeryeong herself hadn’t been perceptive enough to even consider it. i really enjoyed this thank you for writing!

Mina wakes up to the scent of perfume and the crook of a collarbone.

“So you were lying when you said you weren’t tired.”

Mina frowns into Sana’s shirt. “That’s because I wasn’t tired. I was sleepy. How did you know I was awake?”

“Let’s go out,” Sana says instead of answering. Her fingers encircle Mina’s wrist as she talks, brushing Mina’s pulse point.

Mina opens her eyes at that. “But it’s cold outside. It’s warm here.”

Sana laughs. “It won’t be long,” she says. “There’s something I want to talk about with you.”

-

Once, in high school:

“I’ve been looking for you,” Sana says when she gets to the library, giving Mina a hug from behind in lieu of a greeting. “Momo says someone asked you out earlier today.”

Mina looks up. “How did she find out?”

“She said everyone in our grade knows. What did you say?”

“I said no, of course.”

Sana smiles. “That’s good to hear.”

“It is?”

“Of course,” Sana says, giving Mina a kiss on the cheek. “Didn’t you know I want you to be mine only?”

-

“What do you want to talk about?” Sana asks while they’re holding hands and waiting at the bus shelter.

Mina blinks.

“You always have something to talk about,” Sana says, and Mina watches as Sana checks the bus schedule. “It’s one of my favourite things about you. There’s always something to talk about with you. Even if you don’t say you want to talk about it. Let’s talk about something you want to talk about first, and then we can talk about what I want to talk about.”

Oh, Mina thinks, a familiar warmth flooding her heart. She had traced the warmth once, mapping out the path instead of poring over her review materials for a class. It was easy, imagining the warmth making its way from her heart to her lungs and back again, as if this too was something that kept her alive.

“I saw something that reminded me of you the other day. Do you want to see? I took a photo.”

Sana smiles, and it feels an awful lot like Mina’s done something right.

-

“Do you remember that day in high school when I cried and ruined your uniform?”

They’re in the elevator when Sana says this, on their way back up to Mina’s apartment. The metal handrail feels cool under Mina’s hands, and Sana’s cheeks are a little red from the winter cold.

Mina frowns. “That’s not what happened.”

Sana snorts. “I cried and cried into your shoulder during lunch. Like a baby. Your shirt was practically soaked through by the time lunch was over. I felt terrible about it.”

“That’s not what happened,” Mina insists.

The elevator announces their floor, and Sana’s hand finds Mina’s. “Okay,” Sana agrees as she leads them out. “That’s not what happened.”

“Is that what you wanted to talk about?”

“Nayeon texted me today,” Sana says. “She asked about you.”

“That’s nice of her.” Mina means it.

“I think she’s going to ask me out.”

“Is that what you want her to do?”

They slow to a stop in front of Mina’s door. “I don’t know,” Sana admits. “I don’t know what I want.”

“Does she make you happy?”

“Is that what matters?”

Mina hesitates at this, and Sana smiles. “You’re so cute,” she says, unlocking the door. “Do you want to watch something together tonight?”

“Wait,” Mina says, tugging gently on Sana’s hand. “What did you really want to say?”

Sana stills. “Do you really think that’s what matters most? Me being happy?”

“Of course,” Mina says immediately. “Of course it matters most. You always give a lot of happiness to the people you care about. Everything that’s good, you deserve.”

Sana looks surprised.

“You always make me happy,” Mina confesses, and it feels more honest than she wants it to be, closer to the truth than she intends. “It’s only right that you’re with someone who gives you a lot of happiness too. Does Nayeon make you happy?”

“She does,” Sana says after a moment. “She makes me really happy.”

“That’s good. I’m happy for you.” Mina smiles. A part of her means it. She lets go of Sana’s hand, opening the door.

“Mina—”

“What did you want to watch tonight?”

-

Once, in high school:

Sana gets her heart broken by her high school girlfriend on a Sunday night. She tells Mina on Monday, just before attendance is called, and Mina sits through the next four classes thinking about the tremor in Sana’s voice. At lunch, Sana tells Momo about the breakup too. Her voice is steady this time, and it isn’t until Mina reaches for Sana’s hand that she realises Sana’s hands have been shaking underneath the table. Sana cries into Mina’s shoulder for the rest of lunch, and when Sana apologises for it later, Mina frowns.

“Why are you saying sorry? Did you feel better afterwards?”

Sana nods.

“Then you don’t need to say sorry,” sixteen-year-old Mina says, reaching for Sana’s hand. “I’ll always be here for you. Whenever you need me to be.”
