RULES
  • You are not required to have a Dreamwidth account to participate. There are no signups necessary. You may post anonymously if you want.
  • There will be 4 rounds of this fest and 1 round will be opened each week of the fest. Rounds will be left open for fills and comments, so there is no deadline for participating.

  • There is no minimum or maximum word count for fills. In the spirit of the fest, we encourage you to write shorter works!
  • Users are allowed to crosspost their fic on any other site, such as AO3. However, we ask that when possible, writers post the text of their fills as a reply to the prompt and include a link to an AO3 post if they choose to do so, instead of just linking to an AO3 post in their comment. This helps keep discussion in our community!
  • Feel free to subscribe and join the comm to keep track of updates and view them on your reading page.

“How much longer?” asks Yujeong, from across the countertop.

Minyoung asks herself the same thing every day.

Just this morning, when she caught her reflection in the mirror, when she saw the first of the gray creeping up from her roots, unbefitting of the face on the posters but perfectly befitting of someone her age, she asked. When she flipped the sign to “OPEN” on the door of the cafe she’s owned for all of two months, she asked again. And she asked, thrice more, between customers and cleaning and stolen glances at her phone.

But the thing on Yujeong’s mind is caffeine, not finding abnormality in the mundane, so Minyoung sighs. “Give it a minute. The machine has to warm up again.”

It’s just like Yujeong to come through the door half an hour after closing. It’s just like Yujeong to show up, to find Minyoung lost in thought behind the cash register, and to ask for a coffee anyways.

Minyoung won’t pretend she isn’t grateful. She’ll put up a show of annoyance, sure, but she needs the distraction, anything to take the edge off the minefield her mind has become.

“So tell me,” says Yujeong, “have you gotten any better at this, or should I still be asking for Yuna when I come here during the day?”

“Have some faith,” says Minyoung. “I’m working towards my barista license, too. They’re even teaching us new things that Yuna never learned.”

Yujeong raises an eyebrow. “Such as?”

“How to keep something warm for pick-up. How to work with butterfly pea flower.” Minyoung measures out the milk. “How to deal with those crazy TikTok orders all the kids are bringing in.”

“That’s still a thing?” Yujeong laughs. “So what you’re saying is, I should have asked for something more interesting.”

“Absolutely not,” says Minyoung, frowning. “Some of those drinks could kill a horse.”

Yujeong has been taking it well, all things considered. Minyoung remembers the weeks before their so-called reverse climb, when Yujeong wouldn’t come out of her room for days, wouldn’t show them anything other than a smile no matter how forced it was.

Now the coin has flipped to its other side — Yujeong goes for walks in the park and Minyoung counts the grains of sand that slip through her fingers.

Was it really for the best, she wonders?

In the end, the negotiations came down to one simple fact: with the company, their only future was stagnation. Minyoung had hoped for anything else, but when they asked her why she wouldn’t rather settle down, retire comfortably, she knew.

She doesn’t want any of those things — not in the way that she wants music and the women that perform it. Not in the way that she wants Yujeong to stay in her life.

“Hey.” Yujeong cuts through the silence, dropping any pretense of lighthearted fun. She’s good at that, these days. “You’re doing it again.”

“What?” Minyoung stirs. “No, I’m not.”

“Whatever happens, happens. It’s nothing to lose sleep over, unnie.”

It is. It is, has to be. There is no other explanation for why Minyoung, thirty-two, won’t let herself be done. Why she isn’t satisfied with staying where she is.

“Promise me something,” says Yujeong. “Don’t let it change you.”

Too late.

They already burned their ticket out; they already got their fifteen minutes of fame. They were already lucky enough to get that precious second chance, and they shouldn’t ask for more.

But in a little cafe on a quiet, dingy sidestreet, Minyoung can’t help herself. She slides the latte into Yujeong’s hands and, under her breath, asks for a third, a fourth — as many chances as it takes.
