"Unnie, you should sing Drawing our Moments. At least during the ment. Just once."
Taeyeon has often thought that being loved by Im Yoona is like laying back in the middle of the ocean. Thirty odd years of loving and being loved, and no one - not sisters or parents or lovers or friends - has given her the easy, weightless feeling that Yoona does.
She thinks about meeting Yoona when she is 18 and Yoona is 17, the sprightly, gangly girl with the facial structure and the charm that would one day make her the nation's center. She thinks about mornings spent blearily eyed, trying to roll kimbap for breakfast for Yoona and the other maknaes - trying to be mom and unnie and leader all at once.
She thinks this from time to time, through a hundred variety show appearances and music show performances, through the ache between the second and third if her ribs that didn't go away for the first seven years, through dancing two feet above the ground and having none to land on. When it feels like it gets too much, she takes out this thought like a rough cut gem and examines the light reflecting off its facets.
A radio show, now immortalized thanks to the early days of social media, where she makes a joke that makes Yoona throw back her head laughing so hard that her fake bangs flip up over her forehead - an event which, if anything, causes both of them to lose it even more. She can't even remember the joke anymore. She remembers the sound of Yoona's laugh - bright, braying, completely unaffected.
Yoona being asked to pick the top 5 beauties in SM, and picking "Taeyeon unnie?" while cutting her eyes towards Taeyeon - a look that is coy and charming and daring all at once. Taeyeon would not even be able to remember how she responded if not for the Internet, again, (the thing about being an idol is how much of your life ends up preserved in digital amber, sometimes from multiple angles, which sometimes means that your memories are seen from the outside looking in). Apparently she does some silly dance that Yuri came up with. But what she does remember is basically living off that compliment, and that look, for weeks - polishing that memory in her mind until it gleams like hidden gold.
Yoona and Sooyoung at her first solo concert. Sooyoung screaming "kawaii!" and Yoona, not to be outdone, following that up with a piercing yell of "goddess!" She flushes red at Sooyoung's comment. She almost loses it at Yoona's.
It's a million less public moments - the brush of a hand, a warm cup of tea, the mutual look of exhaustion and understanding, the unspoken "are you okay?" The girl who held her through the night, sobbing, when she felt like she had lost it all. And woke up with her the next morning, her fringe stuck to her eyes with sleep so that it pulled a laugh out of Taeyeon that she thought, just the night before, she could never laugh again.
But loving Im Yoona? That feels to Taeyeon like leaning back in the water, being held up by the surface tension while knowing at any point that you could tip over and be pulled under the sun warmed waves - it's exhilarating and risky and everything she thought she's ever wanted and she's never dared herself let have.
So she leans back, but never takes the plunge. She puts a song on her album about twin halves of a heart being torn apart, and anyone who wonders why she names the song after a horoscope that is not her own will just have to keep on guessing. She shows up to as many of Yoona's movie premieres as she can stand, watching the eyes of hopeful costars who stand a little too close and smile a little too broadly. She lets Yoona listen to her songs and basks in the warmth of her honest admiration.
She waits up one night in France, until Yoona arrives after flying halfway around the world, dressed in flannel and the soft blunt ends of a new haircut and the weariness that can't even begin to dim the brilliance of her smile. She wishes her a happy birthday and gives her a hug and tries to tell herself that's enough.
That night in France, after all the cameras are off, Yoona comes by her room just for a while, to laze around on her bed, her head in Taeyeon's lap, and tell her about how she had the world's worst bibimbap on her flight. Everything and nothing at once. She can tell that Yoona's chocolate eyes are growing heavy and her voice is thickened with sleep, and with her makeup off she has never seen anyone quite so beautiful. Her fingers play along the nape of Yoona's slender neck and for one moment she thinks about leaning down and pressing her lips to Yoona's. Just once.
She doesn't, of course. She settles for gently kissing Yoona's forehead as she drifts off to sleep.
And she doesn't sing Drawing Our Moments. She doesn't dare.
Taeyeon knows her real unmatchable skill is to dig so deep that her voice comes not just from within but almost from the gushing groundwater beneath, and she's afraid that if she pours herself out at Yoona's request in front of a thousand people, she'll never be able to stop.
Yoona pouts, publicly, of course, on Taeyeon's Instagram. Taeyeon tries not to think that it's cute, or to feel too bad about it.
Because the thought that Im Yoona might love her back? That's being rolled over in the water by a sudden wave, only to see a whale gliding slowly by underneath, lit only by the traceries of light on the waves above. It's impossible. It's too much. If she reached out and touched it, she might be dragged along by the undertow. Yoona's not the first of her friends she's fallen in love with. But she is the one she will protect - at least, that's what she swears to herself.
She has a new album out - perhaps her most critically acclaimed yet. She's got a new variety show - one that grounds her and draws her out move than ever. And she's got an invitation to sing on killing voice.
That in itself is hardly surprising. Nor is the format, a rundown medley of her greatest hits and songs off her latest album. The producer suggests she finish off with Ending Credits - a fitting coda and the last song on INVU which also has the cynical benefit of reminding everyone that there's an album called INVU.
What's surprising is the message that comes in just before the recording: "Unnie, I heard you're going on killing voice. I'm looking forward to it!" And then something almost too tender to bear, "your voice is your killing point - I can't wait for even more people to hear it."
It convinces her to picks a song off the repackage of her last album instead. When she's asked why, she says simply "a friend asked me to" and either she's finally reached the stage where people have stopped questioning her choices about her music or they recognize that this time it's non-negotiable. For once, just once, she doesn't second guess how she feels.
And a couple weeks later, when the video premieres on YouTube, she sends the link as a reply to that message. Adds, "I'm sorry I'm so late."
It's late at night when the reply comes, "unnie, you can be two years too late and yet just in time :)"
Taeyeon reads it. Pauses for a moment. Just one. Just long enough to fit in years and years of floating in the sea, hear the deep, echoing call and dare herself to take the plunge.
Then she grabs her keys.
