[FILL] before tonight is over

It's past 1AM by the time Jiwon has a moment to breathe, LA awake and alight as it speeds past in the window. She's had no luck before learning to resist the slow and agonizing fatigue that wears her to the bone after every show, but tonight her nerves fizz with anticipation, her phone glows with the last message she received: don't make me wait!
In the hotel lobby, Nagyung is slouched in one of the couches, eyes on her phone. Some things don't change, no matter how far they get from home.
The only thing that comes to mind to say is an awkward, "How's life," to make Nagyung look at her, all fresh eyes that don't match the hour.
Jiwon will have to think about a better opening line for the interviews squeezed into her day tomorrow, but not being around Nagyung makes things easier, makes her less prone to forgetting all the media training her manager has worked hard to make automatic.
"I just saw my favorite singer live," Nagyung says. "So I'd say it's going pretty well." The corner of her mouth quirks upwards, pleased with herself.
Jiwon grimaces through the warmth flooding her chest. "Don't be corny," she requests, and Nagyung's cheek bunches with appropriate embarrassment.
California suits Nagyung. Her skin is sun-kissed even in the uninspiring elevator lighting, her golden-toned hair chopped short past her chin looks too good to be fair. Jiwon tries to watch her without being obvious about it, but the second their eyes glance off of each other they both look down at their feet in sync.
Jiwon can't get it together. She wants to take Nagyung's hand, kiss her and breathe her in, write impossibly sentimental lyrics to the tune of her laugh.
The thought makes her want to get on a plane on a flight across the globe, back to where she started.
She used to be scared of being alone with Nagyung, this irrational dread that didn't match with how good it felt to be the sole center of her focus when all their friends were around. Now, with the exhaustion in her body pausing to listen to the unconscious curve of Nagyung's smile, their knees touching where Nagyung has her legs crossed next to her on the bed while she pores over the room service menu, it hits her like a brick. Nagyung deserves better than this, than being wedged into her schedule for a handful of hours late into the night in some random hotel.
"Hey. Don't you think—" Jiwon says, and almost immediately considers chickening out.
How can she say it like she means it: don't you think you deserve more than just the fraction I have of myself to give?
Nagyung makes a distracted quizzical noise. Without the weight of her full attention, the words to fill the space come tumbling out of Jiwon's mouth. "Don't you think we could do better than this? What about all the cool places you post about in the city— you like the boardwalk— the beach, and what about that, the museum you think is romantic—"
"Hey! Stop it," Nagyung complains. She has an annoyed notch in her brow, not so much intimidating as it is endearing. "I was promised room service in your hotel room. Why are you trying to ruin my perfect night?"
"I just— want to impress you. I don't know why."
Nagyung is either gracious or oblivious enough to pretend Jiwon doesn't actually know the reason why the right words get harder to shape around her.
"What more could you do to impress me? You're already a superstar."
"But—"
Jiwon screeches to a stop abrupt enough to give her whiplash. She thinks about Nagyung lost in the crowd, singing along to songs Jiwon will never admit to anyone are about her. This tour has taken her across the whole country, and yet it felt different, knowing that even if she couldn't find her, Nagyung was there among all those people to see her.
The revelation hits her like another bag of bricks. "Wait, does that impress you?"
Nagyung bursts into a laugh, the one she reserves exclusively for the jokes other people tell Jiwon she should stop making.
"You do more than that," she says. "You make me laugh."
Jiwon doesn't know what she should say, but she's saved by Nagyung collapsing backwards after only a few seconds, hands over her face.
"Ach, Park Jiwon!" she groans. "Why are you making me say things like this."
Jiwon picks up the discarded room service menu and deposits it on Nagyung's face.
"Hurry up and choose what you want to order, then," Jiwon says. The tightness in her chest eases when Nagyung swipes the menu aside to shoot her an irritated look.
Her face smooths over into a content expression the moment she takes a look at the menu again. "Let's have pizza," she says.
Pizza? Really? Jiwon stops herself from saying. Nagyung hooks her leg under hers as if she can hear what Jiwon is thinking anyway, jostling her just enough to get closer, and Jiwon's only barely being delusional when she thinks, Nagyung's right—what could she possibly want to change about a night like this?
