“Didn’t I tell you that one day you would die working too much?”
“Well, I hope you follow along after,” Jieun snarks as he helps her sit up. Words were that she passed out in the garden while cleaning around due to exhaustion, the news must’ve reached Yoongi. “Or we can just help each other so we both live for a long time?”
Yoongi considers it almost a beat too long that Jieun wanted to punch him. “Will you let me have your section in Chat-Shire if you die?”
“I don’t know what I expected.” Jieun exhales.
Yoongi laughs. The fire in the lantern on the floor is growing lights that begin from his feet and dim just below his neck, casting undulating shadows across him that Jieun can see.
Jieun is an artist: her hands nurtures life in the joint of flowers and branches that breathe every corner of her gardenspace. She holds the leaves, tends to the stalks, waters the soil. People go by and ask her to arrange flowers that speak of their happiness or mournings, she helps them. The closer she is to the ground, the more part of her unfurls, like a joy blossoming in the wild.
Yoongi is an artist: his hands had a life of their own. Hidden beneath the calluses on his fingers are endless lines on the parchment papers forming a map of the stars he had talked to. The stars blink, and move, and vanish, Yoongi walks to meet them every night—he is still trying to learn the language of the stars, however they settle on his mouth.
Jieun and Yoongi are both artists: when given a piece of paper and a pen, they write like a wild thing unleashed. Piercing but placid, cutting but curing, running but not away. There will always be truth no matter how it sticks out at an odd angle when hidden.
“Did you know that the stars we see at night might have been dead already?”
“Really?” Jieun lights up. “How does that even work?”
“Teacher said that light travels really fast, but they travel in distance to reach us so it still takes time. You can think of it like seeing the Sun as what it once was eight minutes ago, never in real-time.” Yoongi is looking at the night sky as he talks, the moonlight washes a blue glow on him that makes him look translucent. “When looking at stars, we’re actually looking into the past.”
“I used to be so scared of dying, but looking at them I thought, they’re still here with me despite,” he continues, voice expanding like he was letting it out to take form into what he really wants to say. “So death can look alive, too.”
Jieun looks at him blankly, so still that it jolts him when she frantically fishes the pen out of her pocket and starts writing on the fabric edge of her cape. Yoongi watches.
He remembers their first meeting, light and soft on the edges. He was eight when he started taking the piano and the stars into his hands. The notes flow like water under his hands when touched and the papers are filled with letters scratched and scribbled over in ink.
Then one night Jieun was there at the midsummer festival while he was playing the old piano by the public park. They had only enough time for a few simple chords and scales, but Jieun had responded almost as if she was an extension of himself, every note full and perfectly-weaved into what Yoongi would remember for a long time.
Jieun throws a sealed package at him, not impressed at the condition of his room. He probably hasn’t left the house for days, Jieun thinks.
Yoongi looks at the note attached to it: chamomile, for better sleep; lavender, for calming the nerves; ginger, for blood circulation. Yoongi thinks he hides it well, but Jieun was always good at noticing things and wishing for things.
“I’m going on ahead, wanna tag along?”

I really enjoyed reading ‘Next Stop’. Is there a certain moment you remember while writing it?
“We’re really gonna die someday, huh.”
“Yeah, well,” Yoongi scratches his shoulder, not sure how to reply. “Shockers.”
“Did you know that the imperial court is looking for the elixir of life?” Jieun says, looking at the ceiling unseeingly. “Said they grant humanity immortality.”
Yoongi is not unfamiliar with the concept of eternal life and why some people might desire it. He traces the veins just under his skin, his lifeline, digs his fingers into the flesh just hard enough to leave a trace and watches as they quietly fade.
“I don’t get that,” Yoongi says eventually. “If we have these hearts, shouldn’t we use them?”
Yoongi turns ten on a new moon. Jieun brings him to the lake near the glasshouse she started working at and introduces him to the flowers that bloom underwater. The sky is dark for there was no moon, but even from afar the water shines the color of deep purple similar to the sky he cut open at night to collect the stars.
Something lives in there, she says. Yoongi knows, understands. There, too, lives a god amongst the stars he so draws flat onto the papers. He should have known Jieun would have understood.
Yoongi dips his feet in the water, taking one of the flowers in his hand, anticipating.
