Round 2: Idolverse

Prompts should be based around a scenario related to being an idol. But it doesn't have to be possible in real life!
- Canon compliant (could have happened in real life)
- Canon divergent (things started out the same but details will change)
- Future fic (could happen in the future)
- Alternate universe (idol/non-idol, different group entirely, etc)
Characters/Ship: SNSD Jessica/Taeyeon
Tags: future fic
Prompt: set after taeyeon’s retirement and they’ve both taken a step back from the public eye. taeyeon goes to san francisco for a solo holiday (sightseeing, to visit a good friend, or maybe something else draws her there) and bumps into jessica unexpectedly (bonus if it’s at a club or a bar lol)

Jiwon is wandering around the dorm when Chaeyoung hears what sounds suspiciously like her own voice coming from the phone in her hand.
"What are you watching?" Chaeyoung demands.
Jiwon looks up but ignores her question. "Why did you start a rumor that you don't like Chaewon? Weren't you like, best friends in high school?"
"I don't remember saying anything like that," Chaeyoung says. Jiwon plops onto the couch next to her to show her. Sure enough, it's Chaeyoung, on the live from a few days ago, when she was so bored she started soliciting guesses for her biases from other groups. On top of the intense editing, there's even captions: who said chaewon? ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ no, it's definitely not her.
Chaeyoung laughs until she hits her head on the back of the couch. "This is so great," she says, rubbing at the back of her head. "I hope she sees this."
"Are you sure about that. Everyone and their mom thinks you hate her now."
If Jiwon says the comments are bad, she should believe it. Jiwon has thicker skin than her; Chaeyoung knows better than to go comment scrolling, even when it's just her own. But even when curiosity overrides the lessons she's learned the hard way, all she gets for it is finding the string of angry emojis Jiwon has left in the comments.
"I don't think this will have the effect you were intending," Chaeyoung says, shaking with another laugh. "Wait until they find out you have a burner account to hate on the members."
Jiwon's expression goes from sheepish to incredulous in about two seconds.
"It's not for everyone. Just you," she says, and she has it coming when Chaeyoung tries to push her off of the couch.
Honestly, Chaeyoung is surprised that Jiwon remembered. Sometimes she has a hard time remembering herself—not that Chaewon is her friend, but that the Chaewon she knows and the face of the company's newest shiny girl group are the same person.
She wasn't particularly worried about the video, but when she thinks about it again, she gets chills at the thought. It doesn't matter if everyone believes Chaeyoung has a problem with her. The question is: does Chaewon?
Saerom seems to take the request for another group's practice schedule seriously ("What do you need it for?" she asked, and when Chaeyoung told her, "I'm trying to prevent a scandal," Saerom just looked proud), which makes her the ideal person to ask, unlike Jisun ("Chaeyoung, I am not doing your dirty work for you," were her exact words).
Anyway, by the end of the day, Chaeyoung gets two separate pictures of the schedule in her messages, and she knows exactly when she can track down Chaewon in the company building. It might be "borderline stalking", as Jiwon puts it when Chaeyoung updates her, but it's still light work.
Chaeyoung is lucky she catches Chaewon in the middle of a break when she barges into the practice room. On their way out into the hallway, she hears one of the members wonder in a very loud whisper, "Isn't that the girl who blew up for shit talking Chaewon-unnie?"
She obviously didn't think her plan through very well, but it wouldn't have crossed her mind to plan for this: how different Chaewon looks. It's subtle, but Chaeyoung can see why they would build a group around her, move mountains to get her on a stage, wage wars on the internet on her behalf. It's enough to let in a trickle of doubt. Is it that Chaewon doesn't just look different, but that she is different? Have the edges of a survival show, a disbandment, a cross-company move, and a redebut sharpened her, hollowed her out into a shell of the girl Chaeyoung knows?
It's been so long that it could mean Chaeyoung isn't allowed to joke around with her without thinking anymore. What if—Chaewon wants her to apologize? Chaeyoung couldn't think of anything in the world that sounds worse.
"I'm guessing you saw the video," Chaeyoung says.
Chaewon nods. It's terrifying how her body language doesn't betray anything, perfectly poised even though she's out in the hallway with an old friend and not in front of all the cameras at a music show. "Who hasn't?"
"Um, sorry—then," Chaeyoung starts, the words sour as they're forced out of her mouth. "I'm sure you're a perfectly reasonable choice of a bias."
Chaewon cracks into a smile, into something Chaeyoung can actually understand, too soon. "I'm not mad," she says, voice colored with a laugh.
"I knew that," Chaeyoung says, too fast.
"Did you really?" Chaewon still has a little smile that Chaeyoung's usually the one wearing growing around the corners of her mouth.
Chaeyoung glowers instead of saying anything. She sinks to the floor, back against the wall, and it doesn't take long for Chaewon to join her.
"You're a hard person to be mad at, Chaeng-ah," she adds, more seriously. She slips farther down the wall, resting her head on Chaeyoung's shoulder. "You've always known that."
Just the weight of her, it makes Chaeyoung's heart beat fast, time run slow, everything in between. This she knows. Chaewon used to make going to school, waking up while the whole dorm was fast asleep worth it. When they would sit together in class and at lunch, Chaewon was always happy to lean into her, Chaeyoung's arms around the back of her chair or her shoulders, keeping her close.
"I actually hate you for that, you know," Chaeyoung declares, worming an arm around her. They still fit together.
"You're allowed to joke about how you don't like me, but I'm not allowed to pretend to be upset about it?"
"Exactly," Chaeyoung says. "Also I didn't say anything about not liking you."
Chaewon hides her smile in Chaeyoung's shoulder.
"Why don't we see each other more often?" she says. Chaeyoung can hear what she means by it: I want to see you more often.
"That could change," Chaeyoung says. "Since now I know when and where to find you."
"Careful. They might start calling you a sasaeng next," Chaewon says.
Chaeyoung's not worried at all this time when she elbows Chaewon in the side, or when Chaewon yelps ow! because she grins at her right after, the same bright smile that's burned into the back of Chaeyoung's mind.
