RULES
    • You are not required to have a Dreamwidth account to participate. There are no signups necessary. You may post anonymously if you want.
    • There will be 3 rounds of this fest, and 1 round will be opened each week of the fest. Rounds will be left open for fills and comments, so there is no deadline for participating.
    • Prompts do not have to be claimed before you write them, and they can be filled by more than one person.
    • Once a round is open, you can continue submitting prompts for it until the end of the fest moderation period. (Ex: On February 17 after Round 3 opens, you’re still allowed to submit prompts to Round 1 and 2.)
    • There is no minimum or maximum word count for fills. In the spirit of the fest, we encourage you to write shorter works, but any length is welcome and appreciated!
    • Users are allowed to crosspost their fic on any other site, such as AO3. However, we ask that when possible, writers post the text of their fills as a reply to the prompt and include a link to an AO3 post if they choose to do so, instead of just linking to an AO3 post in their comment. This helps keep discussion in our community!
    • Feel free to subscribe and join the comm to keep track of updates and view them on your reading page.

As Luda opens her eyes and takes in the scenery around her, she realizes she can’t remember much about last night.

She recalls pieces of the afternoon before the mess, sipping Yeoreum’s soup and then finding out Yeonjung put mushrooms in it, followed by a blur of running, yelling, fighting and, at some point, holding a knife to someone’s throat. She can’t tell who. She can’t tell why.

What Luda does remember, vividly so, is separating herself from the group to slide back into the cabin, climbing to the attic and holding Dawon’s dress to her chest, nose pressed to the only thing that was left of her as a lone tear fell down her face.

She remembers grasping it so tightly that she could feel her nails digging into her palms through the thin fabric, remembers getting on her knees as a display of her grief to a God she doesn’t believe in as a final, desperate attempt to make a deal with Him: bring her back and my devotion is yours, entirely yours, for all eternity.

Luda remained on her knees, weeping, begging, chanting all the prayers Dawon taught her since their plane fell and they got stranded in the middle of nowhere, but nothing changed.

She was still alone, dust collecting on her skin, in the middle of an old, dirty attic. Abandoned by God as she’s always been, always will be.

Then, after making a fool of herself for what felt like forever, Luda wiped her tears and got up, stripping herself out of her clothes and putting on Dawon’s dress, allowing her fingers to dance through the red flowers stamped on it.

Dawon was considerably taller than Luda, so she stumbled multiple times as she got down the stairs and made her way out of the cabin, but she didn’t mind. She needed to feel Dawon close to her, somehow, to get through the rest of the day.

After that, it’s blank.

Luda isn’t sure of it, but as she leans against the tree and the unforgiving sun pierces through her skin, something tells her she did something awful last night. Something unforgivable, that can’t be undone.

She analyzes the scene in front of her: her friends, splayed on the ground, dirt all over their clothes and bodies, slowly stirring awake as the birds let them know morning has arrived. She tries to do a head count, one, two, three, and when she gets to eight, her stomach sinks.

Someone is missing, and her head is ringing so loudly that she can’t tell who it is, but all she can think about as she feels a panic attack building up is that she can’t have blood on her hands. Not again, not after letting Dawon get into a rusty, decaying helicopter that they found in the middle of the woods that, tragically, took Dawon’s life and Luda’s heart with it.

Her fingers dig into the dirt beneath her as she closes her eyes and tries to control her breath, but flashes of the argument she had with Dawon before she got into the helicopter start to play on her mind as if she’s being cursed, and the red flowers on her dress start to look like fresh scars, and in an attempt to not succumb herself to insanity, she runs.

She hears someone calling out her name, probably Yeoreum, but she doesn’t look back. Luda runs, and runs, and runs, until her lungs are burning and her feet are bleeding, until she feels she’s punished herself enough.

With her back against a tree, she presses her palms against her eyes. They’re aching with unshed tears, and there’s an unnerving lump in her throat that refuses to go away, but she bites the inside of her cheeks and refuses to cry.

I don’t deserve to, she repeats inside her head, so much so that when she hears her name again and feels a gentle hand on her shoulder, she assumes she’s hallucinating it.

“Luda,” the voice says again, softer this time, and Luda flinches—grief and remorse and an immeasurable amount of love threatening to choke her to death all at once.

It can’t be. It’s impossible. Can it be—

“Dawon?”

Luda turns around and, for a second, she’s there. Nam Dawon, in that same dress, staring at her with stars in her eyes and so, so alive. Luda blinks, once, twice, and she’s still there—waiting for her, offering her hands for Luda to grab them, as she always did.

“Dawon—” Luda sobs, and without an ounce of hesitation, reaches for her hand.

Then, two firm hands place themselves on her shoulders, shaking her body cautiously enough not to startle her too much, causing her to take a step back, shake her head and blink multiple times again, until her head was clear enough to understand what was happening.

“It’s me,” the voice says again and, when Luda looks up this time, her heart sinks. “It’s Sojung.”

Luda bites the inside of cheeks again, strong enough to draw blood this time, but before she can consider running away again, Sojung pulls her into her arms and refuses to let her go anywhere.

“It’s not your fault,” Sojung whispers, “Luda, I promise you, it’s not your fault. None of it.”

That’s enough to break all the walls Luda’s been putting up since Dawon’s death. She sobs, screams, and even hits Sojung’s chest before she throws herself into her embrace again. Sojung lets her, always the reliable captain on the field and now the dependable friend in the middle of so much tragedy in the wilderness, and when Luda finally stops crying, she takes her hand and offers her a smile that was supposed to be comforting, but after years of knowing Sojung she can tell there’s hints of desperation and hurt in it.

“Come on,” Sojung starts, tugging at Luda’s wrist, “Juyeon is missing. We need to find her.”

Luda’s heart races again, the guilt returns.

Unworthy, rotten, abandoned.

The cycle will never end.
