Round 2: Idolverse

Round 1

Prompts should be based around a scenario related to being an idol. But it doesn't have to be possible in real life!
  • Canon compliant (could have happened in real life)
  • Canon divergent (things started out the same but details will change)
  • Future fic (could happen in the future)
  • Alternate universe (idol/non-idol, different group entirely, etc)
Example:

Characters/Ship: SNSD Jessica/Taeyeon
Tags: future fic

Prompt: set after taeyeon’s retirement and they’ve both taken a step back from the public eye. taeyeon goes to san francisco for a solo holiday (sightseeing, to visit a good friend, or maybe something else draws her there) and bumps into jessica unexpectedly (bonus if it’s at a club or a bar lol)

There were only so many ways she could express this happiness before it started to hurt. ‘Of course, I’m happy for Chaewon,’ she says, her smile growing more and more strained each time. ‘She’s always been amazing, I had no doubt she would make it.’

Chaewon hasn’t replied to Yeonhee’s text in six months. Six months, and of course, of course, she’s happy for her. The happiness followed her everywhere; when she went back to the dorms and counted the shoes by the door and noticed the lack of a pair, before reminding herself ‘that’s right, she’s not here.’ When she scrolled on Naver and Pann, and sees Chaewon’s articles trending again and again and again. It’s this happiness for her that always makes Yeonhee leave a cheer or a heart, but no comments. Yeonhee wouldn’t be able to describe her happiness with just words you know.

Although, if she had to try, she would describe her happiness just like this; Happiness feels like a knife stuck in her throat.

Yeah, that seems about right.

Nobody else brings it up when they’re alone. Yeonhee opened her kakaotalk, staring at the tiny 1 from her last text sent out, waiting for it to disappear like always. There was a time she checked every day, but then weeks kept passing by. A picture of Chaewon on the main news page, an unread message. It’s just the way things are now.

Yeonhee considered deleting the app a few times, just for a week or two. In her mind, there was something therapeutic about detaching herself from the world that way. Maybe if she thought about it more, had been anyone else, she would have already done it. But she can’t.

She is Kim Yeonhee, the leader of Rocket Punch, and she’s so happy for Chaewon that she feels like screaming at her.

There’s no reply.

___

‘You’re the fucking worst.’

These words stared back at her, dimly lit in the darkness of her room. Yeonhee read them over in mind, the cursor at the end of the sentence blinking over and over like a timer.

‘Do you have any idol friends besides your members?’ This was the question.

Chaewon’s answer was, “There’s Yeonhee, who’s in the same company as me.”

Chaewon’s smile had gone sweet, a shy lift of her lips as she replied. Yeonhee thinks of all the times Chaewon and her had stayed up together, laying on the floor of the practice room, fingers touching. “I want to debut with you,” one of them had whispered, a confession as good as any. A promise, maybe. Yeonhee thinks of the time when she would come back to the dorm and the number of shoes and jackets at the entrance were more than enough for eight people, nine if someone joined them briefly.

She thinks about the day Chaewon left, for Produce 48. And when she had left again, for IZ*ONE. And when she had left again, just like always, because Chaewon had always moved to places Yeonhee can’t even reach. It was even an inside joke for just the two of them, Yeonhee being shorter than Chaewon after all.

“can we call each other soon? i know you’re busy, but i miss your voice.”

There were moments in which Yeonhee had considered just deleting that message, and then blocking and deleting Chaewon’s number. It was so tempting, as it always is, especially on nights like tonight.

‘You’re the fucking worst.’

Yeonhee breathes in through her nose. She hits send. She turns off her phone, shoves it under her pillow, and breathes it out through her mouth. It feels just as painful as a sob.

There’s only so long Yeonhee can keep her phone off, because no matter what, she’s still Kim Yeonhee, leader of Rocket Punch, and she has things she can’t avoid. Eight hours of escape wasn’t enough, but it was all she has.

When her manager scolds her later, telling her they were trying to reach her—to double check something, but it’s fine now, just be more mindful—she nods curtly, her shoulders tense. Juri holds Yeonhee’s face in her palms and pulls her cheeks. “I’m here, you know? For anything.”

The words make her think of Chaewon.

She waits all day, her phone cold in her pocket. When she gets her hair and makeup done, she chooses to shut her eyes, listening to her other group members bicker affectionately amongst themselves. During the waiting time, she chooses to map out the hallways instead, her phone cool in her palms, the screen dark. Yeonhee carries it just in case she needs to pretend to look at something else. On the ride back, she lets the slow rumble of the van be her music, her eyes heavy.

It’s when she’s alone in her room that she turns it on, plugging it up into the charger before wandering away from the desk she places it on. Suyun and Sohee banter with each other as they make dinner, Yeonhee turns on a random selection from Netflix, anything that fills the moments of quiet where Yeonhee feels angrier at Chaewon the most.

She washes her face, takes her vitamins, and locks her door. Her phone is charged, and there’s a message. There’s a feeling of heaviness that she notices first before she realizes it’s mixed with a feeling of relief and…something.

chaewon

i know. i am.

i’m sorry

i never wanted to make you angry

is it too late to ask if we can meet up, in person? no more texting, or calling. i want to hear your voice.

i know i fucked up all my chances, but even then.

is it too late for me to see you?

Yeonhee wishes she was alone in this dorm, with nobody else in other bedrooms, asleep, listening to music, not thinking of Kim Chaewon of all people. She wants to scream, knowing that the muffle of her pillow would do nothing to hide the feeling. It feels feral, the way it hangs in the back of her mouth, something angry and sad and full of longing and joy and everything. Just, everything.

you

hi, sorry my phone was off today.

i feel stupid for sending that message, i’m sorry, i wasn’t thinking.

as for meeting up, i’ll think about it.

sorry chawon.

Her reply is instant. Yeonhee finds it ironic, the way she wishes the conversation felt so tense and wrong.

chaewon

let me know if you ever feel up to it

i’m sorry.

you

things happen. that’s life.

Yeonhee doesn’t scream.

Jiwon is wandering around the dorm when Chaeyoung hears what sounds suspiciously like her own voice coming from the phone in her hand.

"What are you watching?" Chaeyoung demands.

Jiwon looks up but ignores her question. "Why did you start a rumor that you don't like Chaewon? Weren't you like, best friends in high school?"

"I don't remember saying anything like that," Chaeyoung says. Jiwon plops onto the couch next to her to show her. Sure enough, it's Chaeyoung, on the live from a few days ago, when she was so bored she started soliciting guesses for her biases from other groups. On top of the intense editing, there's even captions: who said chaewon? ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ no, it's definitely not her.

Chaeyoung laughs until she hits her head on the back of the couch. "This is so great," she says, rubbing at the back of her head. "I hope she sees this."

"Are you sure about that. Everyone and their mom thinks you hate her now."

If Jiwon says the comments are bad, she should believe it. Jiwon has thicker skin than her; Chaeyoung knows better than to go comment scrolling, even when it's just her own. But even when curiosity overrides the lessons she's learned the hard way, all she gets for it is finding the string of angry emojis Jiwon has left in the comments.

"I don't think this will have the effect you were intending," Chaeyoung says, shaking with another laugh. "Wait until they find out you have a burner account to hate on the members."

Jiwon's expression goes from sheepish to incredulous in about two seconds.

"It's not for everyone. Just you," she says, and she has it coming when Chaeyoung tries to push her off of the couch.

Honestly, Chaeyoung is surprised that Jiwon remembered. Sometimes she has a hard time remembering herself—not that Chaewon is her friend, but that the Chaewon she knows and the face of the company's newest shiny girl group are the same person.

She wasn't particularly worried about the video, but when she thinks about it again, she gets chills at the thought. It doesn't matter if everyone believes Chaeyoung has a problem with her. The question is: does Chaewon?

Saerom seems to take the request for another group's practice schedule seriously ("What do you need it for?" she asked, and when Chaeyoung told her, "I'm trying to prevent a scandal," Saerom just looked proud), which makes her the ideal person to ask, unlike Jisun ("Chaeyoung, I am not doing your dirty work for you," were her exact words).

Anyway, by the end of the day, Chaeyoung gets two separate pictures of the schedule in her messages, and she knows exactly when she can track down Chaewon in the company building. It might be "borderline stalking", as Jiwon puts it when Chaeyoung updates her, but it's still light work.

Chaeyoung is lucky she catches Chaewon in the middle of a break when she barges into the practice room. On their way out into the hallway, she hears one of the members wonder in a very loud whisper, "Isn't that the girl who blew up for shit talking Chaewon-unnie?"

She obviously didn't think her plan through very well, but it wouldn't have crossed her mind to plan for this: how different Chaewon looks. It's subtle, but Chaeyoung can see why they would build a group around her, move mountains to get her on a stage, wage wars on the internet on her behalf. It's enough to let in a trickle of doubt. Is it that Chaewon doesn't just look different, but that she is different? Have the edges of a survival show, a disbandment, a cross-company move, and a redebut sharpened her, hollowed her out into a shell of the girl Chaeyoung knows?

It's been so long that it could mean Chaeyoung isn't allowed to joke around with her without thinking anymore. What if—Chaewon wants her to apologize? Chaeyoung couldn't think of anything in the world that sounds worse.

"I'm guessing you saw the video," Chaeyoung says.

Chaewon nods. It's terrifying how her body language doesn't betray anything, perfectly poised even though she's out in the hallway with an old friend and not in front of all the cameras at a music show. "Who hasn't?"

"Um, sorry—then," Chaeyoung starts, the words sour as they're forced out of her mouth. "I'm sure you're a perfectly reasonable choice of a bias."

Chaewon cracks into a smile, into something Chaeyoung can actually understand, too soon. "I'm not mad," she says, voice colored with a laugh.

"I knew that," Chaeyoung says, too fast.

"Did you really?" Chaewon still has a little smile that Chaeyoung's usually the one wearing growing around the corners of her mouth.

Chaeyoung glowers instead of saying anything. She sinks to the floor, back against the wall, and it doesn't take long for Chaewon to join her.

"You're a hard person to be mad at, Chaeng-ah," she adds, more seriously. She slips farther down the wall, resting her head on Chaeyoung's shoulder. "You've always known that."

Just the weight of her, it makes Chaeyoung's heart beat fast, time run slow, everything in between. This she knows. Chaewon used to make going to school, waking up while the whole dorm was fast asleep worth it. When they would sit together in class and at lunch, Chaewon was always happy to lean into her, Chaeyoung's arms around the back of her chair or her shoulders, keeping her close.

"I actually hate you for that, you know," Chaeyoung declares, worming an arm around her. They still fit together.

"You're allowed to joke about how you don't like me, but I'm not allowed to pretend to be upset about it?"

"Exactly," Chaeyoung says. "Also I didn't say anything about not liking you."

Chaewon hides her smile in Chaeyoung's shoulder.

"Why don't we see each other more often?" she says. Chaeyoung can hear what she means by it: I want to see you more often.

"That could change," Chaeyoung says. "Since now I know when and where to find you."

"Careful. They might start calling you a sasaeng next," Chaewon says.

Chaeyoung's not worried at all this time when she elbows Chaewon in the side, or when Chaewon yelps ow! because she grins at her right after, the same bright smile that's burned into the back of Chaeyoung's mind.

It’s almost midnight when Jessica’s plane lands at Incheon. Mercifully, there are no fans or camera lenses waiting to greet her when she exits the transit area. No one knows that Jessica was intending to come back to Seoul.

The truth is, Seoul hasn’t featured on her travel plans ever since she left the Kpop idol life behind. For almost a decade now, Jessica splits her time between New York, Hong Kong, and a hundred other cities on the world map. But never Seoul. The city she had once called home, where she had lived through the meteoric rise of all her dreams and then somehow survived all of them shattering at once, is a place Jessica actively runs away from.

Yet, here she is, in a cab winding down the city streets. She feels oddly unbalanced, like she’s caught in between pages of her past as SNSD’s Jessica, and the Jessica that she is now, older and more weary, and still nursing a weather-beaten heart. Some wounds, she’s learnt over the years, never truly heal.

Her heart throbs unpleasantly beneath her ribs as they pull up in front of the Four Seasons Hotel. Jessica retrieves her carry-on suitcase from the kind driver and musters a fleeting smile to thank him.

She can’t quite bring herself to enter the hotel’s swanky lobby, needing a minute to steel herself. Once again, she’s seized with paralysing uncertainty. Is this yet another mistake she’s about to make?

Jessica exhales roughly, pulling out her phone with trembling fingers. It takes her three tries to dial the right number.

Tiffany picks up after the first ring, voice loud and exuberant. She’s the only one who knows Jessica was planning to come, readily giving Jessica all the details when Jessica had texted her last week. “Jessi! Are you here?”

The nickname cuts straight through Jessica, scraping her heart raw. Tiffany hasn’t called her that in years. And there was a time when Jessica had thought she’d never hear those same syllables folded into the cadence of Tiffany’s voice again.

She swallows hard. “I’m here. I’m – I’m not sure this is a good idea after all. Maybe I should just –”

“Jessi,” Tiffany begins, and her voice is softer now, laced with a gravity that draws an ache into the rhythm of Jessica’s heartbeat. The last time she had heard Tiffany so serious was at that fateful meeting that sealed Jessica’s fate as a former member of the Nation’s Girl Group. “You’re already here. After a sixteen-hour flight. Even if you don’t want to stay long, at least come up and say hi.”

“She’s not going to want to see me.”

“She invited you,” Tiffany says simply. As if things can ever be that simple.

“She was drunk,” Jessica breathes. “I’m not sure she even remembers –”

“Does it matter?” Tiffany cuts in. There’s a hard edge to her voice. And even now, on the other side of a decade of missed conversations and separate lives, Jessica knows that Tiffany will not take no for an answer. “Maybe Taeyeon was drunk when she called and invited you to come. But you still came anyway, right? You can’t just leave when you’re literally just twenty floors below us.”

“If she hates me,” Jessica begins tremulously, forcing her feet to move, forcing herself to enter the lobby. “If she hates me for crashing her birthday party, I’m blaming you for making me do this.”

Tiffany huffs, and Jessica can almost see the pinched scowl on her face. “No one is making you do anything.”

After an agonising beat, Tiffany heaves a deep sigh. Jessica’s hand tightens reflexively around the handle of her suitcase. She braces herself for whatever Tiffany is about to say.

“She can never hate you, Jessica. Even after everything that’s happened, she can never hate you.”

Jessica had been expecting it, but all the air still wheezes out of her lungs anyway.

She curls up on one end of the sofa, legs tucked underneath her, as she sips slowly from the glass of wine in her hands. There’s a documentary on a mountain disaster playing on the television, but Jessica is barely watching it, mind drifting off to designs for next year’s Blanc & Eclare Spring Collection. Her phone rings and Jessica picks up without looking at the screen.

There’s a rustle on the other end, the sounds of quiet shuffling, and then, inexplicably, her name nestled within a voice she hasn’t heard in years.

“Sooyeon,” Taeyeon says, slipping over the syllables like she’s relearning how to say Jessica’s name, the name that only Taeyeon has ever called her. “I didn’t think you’d pick up.”

The world grinds to a cruel, unforgiving halt. And then Jessica feels everything; every last frayed strand of emotion, every frosted crack over the iced surface of her heart fractures all over again. On screen, an avalanche crashes down the side of the mountain, wreaking devastation in its wake as it buries an entire camp of climbers alive. In much the same way, Taeyeon’s voice, Taeyeon, crushes Jessica beneath layers and layers of unresolved feelings she thought she’s long forgotten.

It’s hard to draw breath, but Jessica tries anyway, the air rattling inside her lungs. “Taeyeon,” she breathes. “I wasn’t expecting – Why are you calling me?”

“I missed you,” Taeyeon murmurs. Jessica can barely make out the words. Taeyeon’s drunk, she realises. She must be, because if she wasn’t she would have never admitted that out loud, a damning confession she can’t take back. Jessica knows, with a painful kind of clarity, that if Taeyeon was sober, she would have never called Jessica in the first place. “Did you know your number’s still the same? I deleted it from my phone years ago but when I thought of you, my fingers just remembered and it’s good that your number’s still the same, you know?”

“Taeyeon-ah,” Jessica manages, voice somehow steady despite the panic rising steadily in her veins. “What have you been drinking?”

Taeyeon hums for a few long moments, and Jessica hates how she can picture the way Taeyeon’s face scrunches up in concentration. Things would be so much easier if her mind is anything but a treacherous wilderness full of abandoned memories.

“Soju,” Taeyeon says after a while. “A few bottles I think. And some wine. Tiffany brought the best wine over. It’s very good.”

You shouldn’t drink that much. You can’t hold your alcohol well, Jessica thinks. But she swallows the words back down. She lost the chance to nag at Taeyeon years ago.

“Maybe it’s time to stop,” she says instead.

Taeyeon hums again. “My birthday’s next week.”

Jessica sighs. If life was less cruel, she would have forgotten this detail too. But memory is an everlasting thing, no matter how much of it Jessica’s tried to bury away. “I know.”

“I’m having a birthday party with the girls. Will you come?” Mercifully, Taeyeon pauses, giving Jessica a fraction of a second to collect herself. “I want you to come.”

The wine glass slips from Jessica’s fingers because Taeyeon’s words sound too much like a plea and –

Numbly, Jessica registers the way dark, crimson liquid is seeping into her white carpet. It’ll leave an unforgiving stain behind, like the way her heart has been tainted by Taeyeon in unspeakable ways.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“But I miss you.” Taeyeon’s voice sounds so small, Jessica’s heart aches.

“Taeyeon,” she exhales roughly. “Are you even going to remember you called me in the morning?”

“If I forget, will you still come anyway?”

Jessica closes her eyes, leaning back against the sofa cushions. She feels dangerously close to tears. Everything with Taeyeon always hurts. And sitting here, with all her feelings unravelling at her feet makes Jessica feel like she’s twenty-five again.

The heartbreak doesn’t hurt any less a decade later.

But it’s Taeyeon.

And Jessica has never been able to say no to Taeyeon, no matter how broken her heart feels.

Stunned silence greets Jessica’s appearance at the hotel’s penthouse suite. The agonising moment drags on, until Jessica feels the awkwardness and tension start to itch beneath her skin.

She swallows hard. “Hi.”

There’s another beat before Tiffany moves first, crushing Jessica into a warm embrace. Jessica laughs shakily, and then she finds herself in the centre of a flurry of hugs and quite a few tears. She doesn’t bother to wipe her own tears, not when there are gentle fingers brushing them away for her. It brings back memories of the end of their last concert together, before the world as they knew it had splintered apart. They had all been a mess of tangled limbs and tears backstage, clinging on to each other just like they are now.

When the last person – Yoona – finally releases her with a sniffle, someone else steps into view and Jessica feels all the air rush out of her lungs at once.

“Jessica,” Taeyeon greets, staring up with a dark, shadowed gaze. Her expression gives nothing away, and Jessica wonders if Taeyeon has gotten better at hiding her emotions or Jessica’s just long lost the ability to make constellations out of the scattered thoughts that graze Taeyeon’s face.

“Hi, Taeyeon-ah,” she says softly.

Taeyeon’s expression flickers for a second, a hint of something that looks remarkably like hurt flashing across her features before it dissolves into a look that’s all tempered steel.

Taeyeon is a frosted winter now and that, out of everything else, hurts Jessica the most. She misses Taeyeon’s warmth so unbearably all of a sudden, and she yearns to fall into days coloured by the light of Taeyeon’s spring.

It is a longing that feels like it’s cleaving her heart in two. And once again, Jessica can’t help the fear that curls into a knot in her gut; is this yet another mistake she’s about to make?

They end up on the balcony. Taeyeon had the sense to bring her padded jacket and a knitted scarf out but Jessica had left her coat draped over the sofa inside. She crosses her arms, trying not to shiver.

Taeyeon studies her from a few feet away, gaze sharpening as she takes in the way Jessica is trying not to tremble from the cold winter breeze. With a rough sigh, Taeyeon unwraps her scarf and then, before Jessica can even blink, Taeyeon is right in front of her, closer than she’s been to Jessica in years. Jessica freezes at the sudden proximity.

“You should have brought your coat out,” Taeyeon chides, looping the scarf around Jessica’s neck. She lingers, hands curling around Jessica’s shoulders. This time, Jessica isn’t sure if the tremble that runs up her spine is from the bitter winter cold or from the woman in front of her.

“Do you hate me for coming?” Jessica can’t quite meet Taeyeon’s eyes.

It’s Taeyeon’s turn to go completely still. Slowly, she drops her hands from Jessica’s shoulders. “How can I hate you when I asked you to come,” she says quietly.

Jessica lifts her gaze, surprised. “You were so drunk when you called, I thought –”

“I remember,” Taeyeon cuts in with a wry smile. “You’re not easy to forget, Sooyeon-ah.”

Jessica inhales sharply. The nickname and the way Taeyeon’s words sound like a confession, throw her backwards through their shared history, to the last time Taeyeon had said more or less the same thing.

There’s always something about early mornings, especially the ones where nothing ever happens and Jessica gets a chance to curl up in bed with Taeyeon as dawn breaks around them. Neither of them are early risers but filming for their new MV had stretched through the night; it was almost 5am by the time they were allowed to head home.

Jessica shifts, curling into Taeyeon’s side and resting her head on Taeyeon’s chest. Filming had exhausted her more than usual, and coupled with the endless string of meetings and negotiations for her hiatus with multiple company executives, Jessica feels nothing but drained.

At Jessica’s rough exhale, Taeyeon pulls her closer, sweeping her palm up and down the staircase of Jessica’s spine. Jessica exhales, breathes Taeyeon in, and lets the steady rhythm of Taeyeon’s heartbeats sink into her, a soothing lullaby that calms the weather-beaten waters of Jessica’s heart.

“We should get some sleep.” Taeyeon sounds exhausted too and Jessica wonders how much longer they can do this; seven years as a kpop idol feels like an eternity with punishing schedules and the heavy price of fame hanging over their heads.

“Do you think we can still do this when I’m on hiatus?” Jessica murmurs, words muffled in the fabric of Taeyeon’s shirt.

They haven’t really talked about what would happen with them when Jessica goes on hiatus to focus on Blanc. It was an unspoken decision that their relationship would continue despite Jessica’s absence. She’s far from done with Taeyeon and Jessica knows, as surely as the sun that rises every day, that Taeyeon feels the same way too.

But in moments like this, when she’s enveloped in Taeyeon’s arms and falling asleep to the sound of Taeyeon’s heartbeats, Jessica can’t help worrying about their future together.

“We’ll make time,” Taeyeon says, pressing a kiss to Jessica’s temple.

Jessica exhales slowly, fingers curling around Taeyeon’s shirt, seeking a life-long anchor. “It’s two years, Taeyeon-ah. That’s a long time. And I’m not – I’m not going to be around a lot. I’ll be travelling to different cities and – What if we drift apart? What if you get tired of waiting or forget about –”

Taeyeon shifts suddenly, cutting off the rest of Jessica’s sentence. Gentle fingers cup her face, coaxing Jessica to look up.

Sooyeon,” Taeyeon breathes, right before she closes the distance between them. Jessica melts into the kiss, letting herself fall into everything Taeyeon pours into the kiss. It’s more than enough to reassure and soothe Jessica’s worries. But when they break apart to breathe, Taeyeon is looking at her so fiercely, so sincerely, that Jessica’s heart stutters in her chest.

“You’re not easy to forget, Sooyeon-ah,” Taeyeon says quietly.

And Jessica can do nothing else but believe her and pull her in for another sweet kiss.

Months later, everything falls apart and Jessica’s hiatus, once something transient and fleeting on their horizon, turns into a permanent separation – an untimely end of Jessica’s kpop idol career. And a painful unravelling of everything she holds dear with Taeyeon.

"If I say that there's a group called Everglow, people ask, 'is that a cafe?', 'isn't that Coldplay's song?' I just want Everglow to be a group that comes to people's minds as a first thought one day," - Mia, FOR:EVER:GLOW Documentary

-

"Listen, you'll think this is funny—there was this—like, weird dream I had," Sihyeon explains in the hotel bathroom while she's rubbing in product for her dry split-ends. Bangkok is more humid than any of them had expected at this time of the year. "We were home, and I was painting something in my room so stupid that it made you so mad. Serim had to leave the room because of you."

"Are you saying that I should just be blunt with your creative skills?" Mia's voice says from the room through the open door.

"Oh shut up," Sihyeon complains, though she doesn't really care.

"What did you say to me then?" Mia asks, just to humour her. Sihyeon knows by now; it's been the third time, with Mia lying on the bed, her feet still on the carpeted floor, one arm behind her head. She looks so comfortable and content that it doesn't look like she might bolt so soon.

"Nothing. You left. And then I got ready for bed," Sihyeon says.

Mia just gives her this look, her eyes still, dark, mostly unreadable. Her phone is face down on her stomach, a stark dark red shape against her white cotton t-shirt. "Well that's just anticlimactic," she replies, and pushes herself to sit up. The heat and sun in Bangkok is the one thing that brought her out to the poolside, a hint of a tan line beneath the hem of her shorts that had ridden up. It looks really good on her.

"Do you want to swim? Our stylists won't cry about your hair," Sihyeon says.

"Unnie, that sounds like a poor excuse for something that you want," Mia says. It isn't untrue, but still—there's a knock on the door, Aisha coming back after dinner out. That becomes Mia's cue to leave, each time.

Day after day, practice for the concert goes smoothly enough, like it always does. In normal circumstances, Sihyeon is supposed to feel somewhat fulfilled. Jiwon asks her if she's been keeping track of the days when Sihyeon asks them what the date is over lunch, like she hopes it'll change. She watches Mia spill sauce from her pad see ew on her white shirt, over the outline of the awful mint green bra she can see through the cotton. Knocks over her own drink, and almost screams at their manager for asking if she feels thin enough now to do pool photos for Instagram.

"I'm fine," she insists.

"Haha unnie, ouch," Yiren says timidly, not laughing at Sihyeon anymore. She attempts to yank her wrist out of Sihyeon's grip; Yiren stops trying to feel her forehead for an oncoming fever.

Sixth day, Sihyeon confines herself to her room, and pretends to be utterly, dog-gone sick—she can miss practice if it won't ever end. Repeating her days for a concert and stage that might never actually come feels familiar. She just needs to think some things through and maybe time will fix itself. Aisha comes in and out to go shopping with Serim, leaves hot water and some medication for Sihyeon on the way out. You've been reading our chat. Let me in!!, Mia texts her before she stops by in the afternoon, again. This time, she's carrying convenience store food and packaged lunch takeout.

"I had this dream I should have stopped having after debut," Mia tells her. Sihyeon can feel the dip in the bed as she speaks, the weight of Mia's body by her pillow. She smells like soap and clean sweat underneath her cropped hoodie.

"The one where you sing for zoo animals during evaluations? You've said," Sihyeon mutters underneath the cool crisp comforter; Mia peels it off her. "I want to go home," she whispers, screwing her eyes shut when they sting, only momentarily.

"You like Thailand. We can pretend this isn't only our second time here."

The first time they'd gone was last year in December, warm and reliably temperate in December. She doubts that she's ever been wrong about time and schedules but the past seven months in between Seoul and half of the globe went by unbelievably fast, smudged into a blur. Bangkok is their last stop before home.

"What if it's not the second time?"

"Go put yourself out with meds, if you're really sick," Mia sighs, shrugging off her hoodie and lying down next to her. Mia used to bristle towards her plenty years ago, before Jiwon had handed over the responsibility of leading to Sihyeon. It wasn't animosity; Sihyeon also understands better now, that hating the idea of watching oneself on reality TV for an image boost before debut didn't make you any less idealistic, and any less good at your job. They still think Mia would have done well on Produce. Sihyeon didn't know which had been more irritating: the fact that it wouldn't have mattered too much in the end for Mia if she'd gone on the show as well, or the fact that she'd turned the opportunity down.

"Come to the pool tomorrow. I'll attend practice," Sihyeon says, swallowing. The swell in her chest and throat feels weirdly illicit, close enough to the same kind of feeling that makes you want to sneak in soju into practice rooms during training back then, or break something and steal it. Not that she's ever done those things—it's Mia who has done one of the above.

Mia's hand over the back of her hip feels warm and heavy. Sihyeon rolls over onto her side to face her, lets her hand slide over the crease on Sihyeon's hip and the top of her thigh.

"I'm not really sick, physically," Sihyeon says.

"I know," Mia snorts, and the city accent slips and curls into dialect around the edges. "So what's wrong with you?"

"What if I just wanted to know what's so good about being a shut-in on tour?"

"It's fucking great."

"And here, now?"

"Unnie. Let's not do this now," Mia says quietly. She doesn't move away; she's always so much more open, easy and inviting when she's tired like this. Sihyeon feels her own chest tighten, pulse jumping.

She also sounds genuinely apologetic for the first time this afternoon, for all the versions of this afternoon. It was how she'd sounded when they'd had meeting after meeting and Mia had decided that a break was best for her after this tour. Some time home would be nice for a while, she'd said. She hadn't given management a tentative notice on how long her hiatus would be and when she'd come back. For some reason, that hurt a lot less than the present.

Sihyeon had daydreamed about some things in between the repetitive nightmare of the days looping. Asking her to promise to come back. Asking her to stay in touch if she didn't, maybe. Pressing her own mouth to Mia's neck long and hard enough to leave something there, raw and reddened. It would have no consequence.

"Just let me know what you need today. I have time," Sihyeon replies.

Tags: canon compliant, ambiguous friendship to lovers, some tension!, unafraid to show their relationship on camera cuz everyone thinks they're just besties and they get away with it!

Prompt: basically just them falling in love through canon based events and everything in between.

"By chance, we ended up using the same waiting room one day. That day, Jihyo kept looking me up and down. She got my number and kept making moves so I decided to be her friend." - Sejeong

Sejeong has also said Jihyo told her if she wants to be alone, they can be alone together which led to them travelling together. i'd recommend watching their vlogs to jeju, and sejeong's appearance on "On & Off" if y'all haven't already.
